Qantas has taken a major step towards launching the world’s longest commercial flights, with its first Project Sunrise Airbus A350-1000ULR completing its maiden test flight in France.
The ultra-long-range aircraft took off from Airbus’ facility in Toulouse and flew for three hours and 43 minutes over France and the French Atlantic Coast. The flight was operated by Airbus test pilots and engineers, with the focus on checking the aircraft’s primary systems.
Project Sunrise is Qantas’ long-running plan to connect Australia’s east coast with London and New York non-stop for the first time. The specially configured A350-1000ULR aircraft are designed to operate flights of up to 22 hours, removing the need for stopovers on some of the most important long-haul routes from Australia.
A key part of the aircraft’s ultra-long-range capability is a specialised fuel system, including an additional 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank. Qantas says this will give the aircraft the range needed for its planned non-stop services.
The maiden flight marks the beginning of a two-month testing campaign, with the aircraft expected to complete around 80 hours of flight testing. It will also undergo extensive ground checks and certification work for new and redesigned components, including a new galley air-cooling system with lighter and more efficient refrigeration units.
A second Project Sunrise aircraft is also moving through Airbus’ final assembly line. Qantas says that aircraft is having its four-class interior fitted and will be painted in Qantas livery before being delivered to the airline in April next year.
For travellers, Project Sunrise is one of the most significant developments in Qantas’ international network in years. Non-stop flights from Sydney and Melbourne to cities such as London and New York would dramatically simplify long-haul travel, particularly for premium passengers and business travellers who value total journey time.
The big question now is which route will launch first. Qantas says it will announce the first Project Sunrise route and the timing of inaugural commercial services later this month.
Stay tuned!
