50% bonus Qantas status credits for ABN holders

0

Qantas Business Rewards – Qantas’ loyalty program for SMEs – has an EOFY promotion offering 50% bonus status credits on new flight bookings.

If you’re looking for a quick boost to your status balance, this is a good deal.

Status holders enjoy special perks on the ground and in the air.

To take advantage of this offer, you must register and book a flight between 29 April 2019 and 7 May 2019 for travel until 30 June 2019.

An eligible flight for the purpose of this promotion means any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number on the ticket where status credits are normally earned.

Get 4 Qantas Points per $1 with Woolworths online until Friday

0

Around a year ago, Woolworths joined the Qantas Mall shopping portal (now known as Qantas Shopping) allowing Qantas Frequent Flyer members to earn 2 Qantas Points per dollar when shopping with Woolworths online.

Shopping online via Qantas Shopping (and Virgin Australia’s similar Velocity eStore) is one of the easiest ways to boost your points balance.

Until Friday (tomorrow), you can earn double the usual points with Woolworths online, bagging 4 Qantas Points per dollar spent, which of course is in addition to any points you’ll earn through Woolworths’ own loyalty program or your credit card rewards program.

As is usual with Qantas Shopping, you’ll have to first log into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account and then follow the link to Woolworths, making sure cookies are enabled on your browser so Qantas can track your purchase (you can check if cookies are enabled here).

The bonus points will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account within a few weeks.

Once you’ve made your purchase, you can pick it up for free or get it delivered.

And, of course, make sure you pay with a high points-earning credit card, like the Qantas American Express Ultimate Card which earns 1.25 Qantas Points per dollar spent and has a huge 100,000 bonus points available right now for new Card Members.

Enjoy a free Dubai hotel stay when flying with Emirates

0

Emirates has launched an attractive promotion offering a free hotel stay for one night in Dubai for customers travelling either to Dubai or beyond.

This is available in all classes of travel, including economy.

All the offer details are on Emirates’ website here, but in short:

  • You must book a flight on emirates.com/au using the promotional code ANZDC19 between 16 and 30 April with a hotel stay from 1 May to 30 November 2019
  • The flight can be one-way or return but must originate in Australia
  • The offer is valid only on Emirates marketed flights, operated by Emirates and flydubai (i.e. no codeshares) and excludes points bookings
  • After booking and paying, the complimentary stay will be processed and an accommodation itinerary will be emailed to you directly from the Emirates Contact Centre
  • Economy class travellers can choose from the Rove Downtown Dubai or Rove City Centre Deira, which are three-star hotels, while business and first class travellers can stay at the five-star JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai
  • The promotion includes bed and breakfast for up to two adults and one child under 12 using existing bedding
  • The connection or stay time in Dubai must be at least 10 hours.

If you’re travelling beyond Dubai and want to stay in Dubai for less than 24 hours (which counts as a layover rather than a stopover), you can book a one-way or return fare and simply choose an itinerary with a long layover, like the example below.

If you want to stay longer than 24 hours, this would count as a stopover, and you’ll have to use the “Advanced search” feature to make it a multi-city booking. When I played around with this for an itinerary from Melbourne to Dubai, the price was the same as if I’d booked a fare with just a layover.

Reminder: major American Express points changes kick in on 15 April

0

In just 10 days – on Monday 15 April 2019 – major changes to the points earn and redemption rates across American Express’ card range will kick in: a key event for those of us who rely on Amex cards to maximise points earn.

I covered these changes in detail when they were first announced six months ago and I also shared my plans for how I would respond.

In short:

  • the changes to cards that earn Qantas or Velocity Points directly are straightforward: points earn rates will fall by a modest 0.25 points per $1 for all purchases except with government, which remains the same (overall, I don’t think this is a big deal)
  • the changes to Amex’s own-brand cards, which earn flexible Membership Rewards points, are more complicated, because both the earn and redemptions rates will be adjusted – and sadly in most cases the rewards are being significantly reduced.

Amex has displayed the new points earn and redemption rates on its website for a few months now, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise even to new customers. You can read my summary of the changes here.

As I outlined in my earlier post, in anticipation of this I have brought forward a lot of spend to take advantage of the current, higher earn rates.

There’s still a little time left to do this, but I assume the transactions will have to clear by 14 April 2019 – and that usually takes a few days.

Since the points transfer rates from Membership Rewards to airlines will fall on 15 April, next week I’ll be transferring all of the MR points earned on my Explorer card to my favourite airlines (mainly Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer).

I’ll do this a few days before the 14 April deadline just to have a buffer in case there are any unforeseen IT issues or glitches.

Again, if you have a balance of Membership Rewards points, you should consider doing the same – but note that some airlines set a ‘hard’ expiry date for points, which is three years in the case of the popular Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. (Virgin Australia, on the other hand, imposes a ‘soft’ expiry, where points don’t expire so long as you keep your account active by earning or redeeming a point every two years).

Overall, while I’m disappointed about the changes Amex is implementing, I understand the commercial rationale for them given the major regulatory shake-up we’ve seen recently in the credit card space.

I strongly believe Amex cards will continue to provide excellent value when you take into account all of the points, travel, lifestyle and money saving perks they provide.

‘The House’: a new pay-to-enter lounge option for Sydney and Melbourne

0

Travellers in Sydney and Melbourne have another pay-to-enter lounge option when jetting off abroad, with ‘The House’ now offering entry to paying customers.

The House was until recently the Etihad Airways lounge before being taken over by the independent lounge operator No 1 Lounges. Eligible Etihad, Virgin Australia and British Airways passengers still get complimentary access to the space, but now anyone with a valid boarding pass can also enjoy it for a fee.

That fee is $80 per adult and $40 per child aged 5 years or more (younger children get in for free) when booked online, or more at the door (the website states $90 per adult) subject to availability.

You can use the lounge three hours prior to your flight time and buy extra hours in advance or while you’re in the lounge.

The space looks quite stylish, with nice views across the tarmac.

A la carte dining with full waiter service is on offer.

You’ll also find all the usual amenities like showers, complimentary WiFi, magazines and newspapers, and charging points.

The lounges are open from 4am to 9pm daily. More information is available on The House website.

If you’re looking to pay to enjoy a lounge, this looks like a great option. In Melbourne you also have the Plaza Premium and Marhaba lounges, while Sydney your only other choice is the SkyTeam lounge.
