Get double Qantas Points or Status Credits on new bookings

Qantas has launched an exciting promo offering travellers either double Qantas Points or Status Credits on new bookings.

To take advantage of this offer, you must register and choose either double points or status credits. You can’t get both – so choose wisely.

Then, book any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number between 25 March and 1 April 2022 for travel from 2 April 2022.

The booking must be one where Qantas Points or Status Credits are normally earned (ie. not a reward booking unless you are a Points Club member).

Flights operated by Jetstar and other partner airlines will not be eligible for this offer.

You can book as many flights as you like, but make sure each person travelling on the booking registers independently.

Air New Zealand to launch non-stop Auckland-New York flights

Some big aviation industry news dropped today.

Air New Zealand has announced it will begin flying direct from Auckland to New York on 17 September 2022, almost two years later than it originally planned, as a result of the pandemic.

Landing at New York’s JFK airport, the airline will operate its flagship route from Auckland three times a week, year-round.

It will deploy a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a premium-focused configuration.

For Australians, this presents a new route option for travelling to the Big Apple, with potentially just one layover in Auckland.

Travellers will also be able to connect to United Airlines flights to elsewhere in the USA and Canada.

Flight NZ2 will depart Auckland on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7.40 pm, landing in New York at 7.55 pm (same day).

Flight NZ1 will depart New York also on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 9.55 pm, landing in Auckland at 7.30 am two days later.

The flight time will be up to 17.5 hours.

The Dreamliner aircraft used on this route will feature fully-flat business class seats arranged in a 1-1-1 layout, premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout, and economy seats in a 3-3-3 layout, many of which can be turned into a “Skycouch”.

Every Qantas and Jetstar trans-Tasman flight in May will be a ‘Points Plane’

In a heartening announcement for travellers, Qantas and Jetstar have shared plans to boost their flight schedules between Australia and New Zealand.

This move comes following the confirmation that New Zealand will reopen for quarantine-free travel to all Australian travellers from next month. Good news for those planning to visit loved ones or explore the breathtaking landscapes of NZ during the Easter holidays.

Starting from the 13th of April, Qantas and Jetstar will ramp up their services, operating as many as 30 return flights per week across five routes.

This is a significant increase from the current schedule of two return flights per week, reflecting the pent-up demand for travel across the Tasman.

Pre-pandemic, the airlines together operated more than 170 return services each week, showing the potential for future growth.

Travellers will have plenty of options to choose from, with Qantas offering daily flights from Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney to Auckland, and from Sydney to Christchurch. These flights will be serviced by a mix of Boeing 737s and wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft.

Jetstar isn’t being left out, with three weekly flights from the Gold Coast to Auckland using their Airbus A320 aircraft.

Qantas will fly daily from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to Auckland and Sydney to Christchurch with a mix of its Boeing 737s and wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft.

Jetstar will operate three weekly flights from the Gold Coast to Auckland using its Airbus A320 aircraft.

And it doesn’t stop there. In May and June, both airlines are planning to further increase their flight frequency and reintroduce flights from Australia to Queenstown and Wellington.

For those looking to connect beyond the major cities, Jetstar’s New Zealand domestic network offers more than 60 return flights per week to five destinations. Not to mention, Qantas’ Australian domestic routes and extensive international network will also connect seamlessly with these trans-Tasman flights.

Avid frequent flyers can rejoice as well. Eligible passengers will have access to Qantas’ Sydney and Melbourne International First and Business lounges, as well as the Brisbane International Lounge, for some pre-flight relaxation.

In addition, Qantas’ Fly Flexible booking policy is offering peace of mind to travellers. This policy allows for unlimited flight date changes on trans-Tasman flights booked before 30 June for travel until 31 December 2022 (fare difference may apply).

Throughout May, every flight will become a Points Plane, meaning you can use your Qantas Points to book any seat as a Classic Reward Seat.

Additionally, Qantas has upped the availability of seats that can be booked with points on their trans-Tasman routes by up to 50% for the rest of the year.

Classic Flight Reward seats start from 18,000 points with Qantas and 14,400 with Jetstar, plus taxes, fees and carrier charges.

So, if you’ve been dreaming of a New Zealand getaway or reuniting with loved ones, now is the time to start planning. Thanks to Qantas and Jetstar, the Tasman seems a little less wide today.

Qantas to fully reopen Sydney and Melbourne international lounges

Qantas will fully reopen its Sydney and Melbourne international lounges on 27 March as overseas flights continue to ramp up.

Qantas’ two international lounges in each city were shuttered when the pandemic hit in March 2020.

Since overseas travel resumed in November 2021, eligible travellers have been directed to a hybrid business/first class space as a temporary arrangement that saw many people left without access – including single-use invite holders and customers of partner airlines.

From 27 March, things will return to ‘normal’, with both the International Business Lounges and International First Lounges reopening for all eligible guests, and with full service offerings.

The business lounges will once again welcome Qantas Club members, Gold frequent flyers, travellers in business class, eligible oneworld/partner airline customers, and single-use invite holders.

Guests can expect to enjoy complimentary food and beverages, shower facilities and wi-fi, though the lounge spaces themselves look quite dated.

The much more upscale first lounges will once again welcome Platinum and Platinum One tier holders, first-class travellers, eligible oneworld/partner airline customers and invite-holders.

They will enjoy the full ‘first’ experience including a la carte dining and day spa services in stylish surrounds.

This is great news for eligible Qantas and oneworld customers, and marks another key milestone in the rebound of international travel.

In separate news, Sydney and Melbourne’s American Express lounges are also set to reopen in the coming weeks (date TBC).

Earn Qantas points and status credits with Qantas’ ‘green’ membership tier

Qantas has turned a new leaf with the launch of its innovative Green membership tier.

Starting today, Qantas Frequent Flyers will earn rewards for making sustainable choices, whether they’re traveling or simply doing their bit for the environment at home.

This development sets a new standard in the airline industry, as Qantas becomes the first to recognise and reward its frequent flyers for sustainable actions both on the ground and up in the air.

The Green tier joins the airline’s existing membership tiers – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Platinum One. The aim? To incentivize and reward the airline’s 13 million frequent flyers for everything from offsetting their flights, to choosing eco-accredited hotels, buying sustainable wines, and even supporting environmental initiatives.

It’s all about empowering the members to make eco-conscious choices and acknowledging those efforts.

Earning the Green tier status requires members to complete at least five sustainable activities across six specific areas in their membership year. And the rewards are nothing to sneeze at.

Members can choose between receiving 10,000 Qantas Points, 50 Status Credits, or having Qantas purchase three tonnes of carbon offsets on their behalf.

On top of this, there are other exclusive benefits, all in addition to those associated with the members’ existing flying status or the Points Club.

The six activity areas span across various aspects of lifestyle and travel:

  1. Travelling: Opt for an eco-accredited hotel through Qantas Hotels in Australia.
  2. Flying: Counterbalance your flights’ emissions through the Fly Carbon Neutral program, with Qantas matching contributions dollar for dollar.
  3. Sustainable purchases: Choose from over 200 sustainable wines via Qantas Wine, or make your Qantas Wine and Qantas Rewards Store deliveries climate positive for just a dollar.
  4. Lifestyle: Install solar panels or contribute to high quality carbon offset projects globally.
  5. Reducing impact: Take the sustainability quiz on the Qantas Wellbeing App and learn how to minimize your carbon footprint.
  6. Giving back: Donate to sustainability-centric organizations and projects, including those protecting the Great Barrier Reef or initiatives by charity partners like OzHarvest, UNICEF, and Kimberley Land Council.

Qantas has said it will recognise certain sustainable actions taken by members since the program was first announced in November.

Members will also unlock additional bonus points, like earning 150 points for every night stayed at an eco-accredited hotel booked via Qantas Hotels, and 250 bonus points for every case of six eco-wines purchased through Qantas Wine.

Virgin-Delta partnership to end on 12 June 2022

Virgin Australia has confirmed its partnership with US-based Delta Air Lines will end on 12 June 2022.

That’s the last day Velocity Frequent Flyer members can earn points and status credits, as well as enjoy other status benefits, on Delta flights.

It will also be the final day to book a future reward seat with Delta or make changes to an existing reward booking, such as a route change. (Date changes will continue to be permitted up to 1 year from ticket issue, subject to availability.)

Missing points for eligible Delta flights taken on or before 12 June 2022 will be able to be sought via the Velocity website until 12 December 2022.

In the coming weeks, Virgin will launch a new partnership with United Airlines, which was announced last year. The tie-up will triple Virgin’s reach into the Americas, with customers to access more destinations across the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America.

Eligible Velocity and United MileagePlus members will receive the following benefits when travelling on Virgin Australia and United services worldwide:

  • priority check-in
  • priority boarding
  • priority baggage delivery and additional baggage check allowance
  • priority security clearance
  • lounge access.

Virgin Australia extends bonus status credits offer

In September last year, Virgin Australia announced a range of measures to help customers earn and retain status, including a bonus status credits offer on new bookings.

Under the arrangement, Velocity Frequent Flyer members who booked eligible Virgin Australia services from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022 could receive a significant boost to the status credits they earn: up to double status credits for economy bookings and up to 45 per cent bonus status credits for business class bookings.

Virgin Australia has now extended this offer for travel to 30 June 2022. This applies to both new and existing bookings. Here are the eligible fare classes and bonus earn rates (note, reward bookings are not eligible for this offer):

This is a generous move from Virgin and should help many customers retain their status.

Pay-to-enter Aspire Lounge opens in Perth Airport international Terminal 1

Perth Airport’s international Terminal 1 has its first pay-to-enter lounge for travellers to enjoy before jetting off overseas, no matter which airline or class of travel they are flying in.

The stylish new lounge, built by Swissport’s Aspire in partnership with Perth Airport, opens its doors on Thursday 10 March 2022, a week after the re-opening of the Western Australian border.

Located on level 3 of Terminal 1, the lounge will provide travellers with panoramic views of the airfield and Perth city skyline, as well as easy access to the international departures area and boarding gates.

The lounge has been designed to reflect the community and culture of Western Australia, with artwork and installations by local artists, and local produce, wines and beers.

There’s even a giant quokka for a perfect departing photo opportunity.

The lounge features comfortable seating, fully accessible shower facilities and baby change, multiple dining and bar options, along with charging stations and a host of other facilities for working, dining or relaxing.

This includes spacious desks and office chairs for business travellers near the entry, and a separate family area provides booth seating and special features to entertain kids.

The food service will offer “contemporary classics and modern fare” utilizing locally sourced ingredients.

The dishes will be served buffet style.

The bar service includes local beers, regional wines and other beverages.

Passengers will be able to pre-book their lounge tickets online via the Perth Airport website for $66 per visit or a walk-up rate of $77.

Priority Pass members will also be granted access along with participating credit cards (such as the American Express Platinum Card) and airline partners (unspecified at this time).

The opening hours will vary based on scheduled departure times, as more international airlines resume flying to Perth.
