Alaska Airlines to join oneworld, strengthen partnership with Qantas

0

Alaska Airlines has announced its intention to join the oneworld alliance as a full member in mid-2021.

This is good news for Qantas customers as it means the two airlines’ existing partnership will deepen.

The Seattle-based airline has a strong network in North America.

Right now, Qantas gold and platinum status holders and Qantas Club members can access Alaska lounges when they are flying with the airline and connecting to or from a Qantas international flight.

Alaska has lounges in Seattle, Anchorage, New York JFK, Portland and Los Angeles.

Once Alaska joins oneworld, all Qantas gold and platinum elites will have access to Alaska’s lounges no matter where or which class they are flying, and they’ll also enjoy other tier perks like a bigger baggage allowance and priority check-in and boarding.

Qantas customers can currently earn and redeem Qantas Points with Alaska.

Once the airline joins oneworld, status credits will also be on the menu.

Alaska is also expanding its partnership with oneworld member American Airlines, with immediate reciprocal benefits for customers, such as lounge access.

The two carriers will also closely coordinate their networks and start flying to new destinations.

This includes today’s announcement by American Airlines for the first nonstop flight from Seattle to Bangalore, India, starting October 2020, along with new service from Seattle to London, starting in early 2021.

Fine Hotels & Resorts program success story: How I’m scoring $1000+ of benefits on a hotel stay

0

Next month I’ll be taking off to Europe to celebrate my birthday, with the first stop (and where I’ll be spending the actual day) being Amsterdam – a city I’ve wanted to return to for ages.

When I was researching hotel options, I came across such a good deal through American Express’s Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) program that I thought it was worth sharing with readers. It’s a great example of how much value can be gained through FHR.

FHR is a program exclusively available to holders of Amex’s Platinum Card (including the business version) and the invite-only Centurion Card. It provides complimentary benefits at over 1,000 five-star properties worldwide including daily breakfast for two people, guaranteed 4pm late checkout, room upgrades when available, a special amenity at each property (typically a US$100 dining credit), and more. These benefits offer an average value of over $700 for a two-night stay.

The properties on FHR are quite high-end and often way outside my budget, but given how much value the program provides, I always check it first to see what’s available. I’ll then compare the results with the deals I can get directly through my favourite hotel chains and via my preferred online travel agent Hotels.com.

FHR is sometimes the clear winner. I’ve previously shared one example of this, when my family scored over 600 Euros of benefits during a very affordable hotel stay in Vienna.

With this upcoming trip to Amsterdam, though, I’m getting an even better deal. For the three-night stay, I’ve booked The Dylan hotel: a gorgeous, five-star boutique hotel converted from a 17th century theatre and situated on one of the city’s central canals.

The property is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World network and houses a Michelin-starred restaurant.

My accommodation budget for this trip is $400 per-night, which is far below the regular room rate of $600 per night at The Dylan. However, when I checked FHR it was running a “third night free” promotion for this hotel, which meant I’d pay $1200 for three nights – exactly in line with my budget. Of course, I snapped the deal up straight away.

The base-level room I booked should be upgraded at check-in (I’m quite confident of this – the hotel is unlikely to be full mid-week in March) and we’ll also get free breakfasts for two people (worth 200 Euros) and a US$100 credit to use at the hotel restaurant or cocktail bar.

Combined with other perks like a late checkout, this easily adds up to over $1,000 of complimentary benefits. And best of all, I’ll get to enjoy my birthday at a stylish, interesting and memorable hotel that otherwise would be out of reach. Thanks Amex!

If you’d like to access the FHR program, you’ll need to get your hands on Amex’s stylish, all-metal Platinum Card. We have a special partner offer of 150,000 bonus points available with this card until this Tuesday 11 Feb 2020. Don’t miss out!

That’s a pretty generous deal and it’s on top of the regular points earned.

Business owners: earn up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points on fuel with BP

0

Qantas and BP have launched the first stage of their new partnership with a very lucrative offer for business owners.

Businesses that sign up for a new BP Plus fuel card by 30 April 2020 and spend $150 per month on fuel will earn 10,000 bonus Qantas Points per month for the first five months (totalling 50k points).

In addition, by filling up with over 20,000 litres of fuel within the first six months, you’ll get an additional 50,000 bonus points. Obviously this is most relevant for businesses with a fleet of vehicles.

The BP Plus fuel card is now the exclusive fuel partner of Qantas Business Rewards (Qantas’ loyalty program for businesses) replacing the Caltex Starcard. As a cardholder you’ll earn 0.5-1 Qantas Point per litre of fuel and 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on in-store purchases. There are also discounts available as well as cash-flow benefits for your business as you get up to 51 days interest free to pay off purchases.

BP Plus is free to join, however there are monthly fees of $4.95 per card if you have 1-2 cards, or $2.20 per card for 3 or more cards.

Further stages of the tie-up should be announced soon. This will see Qantas Frequent Flyer become the cornerstone partner of BP’s new customer loyalty program, BP Rewards, replacing Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer program. The BP Rewards program will allow regular consumers to earn Qantas Points on fuel and in-store purchases across participating BP retail sites.

Great deal: Earn 9 Velocity Points per $1 spent on hotels (via Expedia)

2

Virgin Australia partnered with Expedia last year to allow Velocity members to earn points on hotel stays. This was a great addition to Velocity’s partner list and the ongoing earn rate was set at 3 Velocity Points per $1 spent.

This week Velocity launched a promotion offering 9 points per $1 spent for new bookings made until 18 February 2020. This is coupled with a sale, with up to 35% off rooms available.

To take advantage of this deal, book via: https://expedia.virginaustralia.com/lp/tvp-promotion

You’ll need to provide your Velocity Frequent Flyer membership number during the booking process.

Expedia is one of the world’s biggest online travel agents, with access to a huge number of hotels. Before you book though, make sure to compare the price with other websites so that you’re confident you’re getting the best deal.

Alert: Loads of business and first class award seats available to Tokyo

0

If you’re sitting on a stash of Qantas Points and thinking about visiting Japan over the next 12 months, right now there is a massive number of business and first class award seats available between Sydney and Tokyo with Japan Airlines – with Qantas providing domestic connections in Australia if necessary.

From around May 2020 through to the end of January 2021, there are many days with up to four business class award seats available in both directions between Sydney and Tokyo Haneda, including during school holidays. From September, the airline is re-introducing first class on this route and there are also two first class award seats available on many days.

This is a huge opportunity to use Qantas Points, especially if you want to travel as a group or family. We rarely see four business class award seats available.

Seats between Sydney and Tokyo cost 90,000 Qantas Points in business class and 129,300 in first class each-way, plus taxes and fees (around $180). The point cost will be higher if you’re adding a domestic Qantas connection (use the multi-city tool to book if your connection is in a different cabin to the main Tokyo flight).

I’ve previously reviewed Japan Airlines business class, which is a fantastic way to fly. While the layout is 2-2-2, everyone has direct aisle access due to the staggered layout. The service, food and drinks (sake!) are also top-notch.

First class is also reportedly amazing.

These seats will be snapped up quickly, especially for the peak travel periods – so act fast!

Virgin Australia boosts points, status credits on Elevate fares; launches ‘Economy Light’ fares

0

Virgin Australia is increasing the points and status credit earn rates on its ‘semi-flexible’ Elevate fares for long-haul international flights. These fares sit between the airline’s cheapest Getaway tickets and fully-flexible Freedom fares.

The changes apply to Virgin’s own long-haul flights (ie. to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Los Angeles), as well as codeshare services operated by partner airlines (ie. Alitalia, Delta, Etihad, Hainan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways and Virgin Atlantic).

Flights operated by partner airlines must carry a VA code to attract the higher earn rates.

For flights booked from 23 January 2020 for travel from 23 April 2020, the number of Velocity Points earned will increase by 20% from 0.5 to 0.6 Velocity Points per mile flown.

Customers will also earn 5 extra status credits in each direction.

Here are the current status credit earn rates, which will continue to apply to all travel until 22 April 2020, as well as flights after that date which were booked before 23 January 2020.

Here are the status credit earn rates for bookings made from 23 January 2020 for travel from 23 April 2020.

As you can see in the table above, Virgin is also introducing a new “Economy Light” fare for flights to Hong Kong, Tokyo and America originating from Australia. It will be cheaper than a Getaway fare but will earn fewer points (0.25 Velocity Points per mile flown) and status credits, and come with a range of restrictions including less checked baggage (one 23kg bag), no advance seat selection (until check-in), no upgrades (except to Economy X) and no changes or refunds.

Platinum, Gold and Silver Status members will still receive their complimentary baggage allowance, however preferential seating for status members won’t be available.

More information about these changes is available here.
