With travel restrictions beginning to ease, many people are turning their attention toward possible future travel plans, particularly within Australia and to New Zealand. In fact, today it’s being reported that plans for a trans-Tasman ‘travel bubble’ could be announced as soon as next month, which is far earlier than I was expecting.
If you’re in that camp of people contemplating a getaway, Qantas is making it easier to book now and change or cancel the flights later.
Following on from last week’s announcement of more flexibility around paid fares, Qantas is now also giving customers an incentive to book reward seats using Qantas Points.
Specifically, when you use Qantas Points to book a Classic Flight Reward seat, you’ll be able to change the date or cancel your booking free of charge until 31 October 2020. This covers both domestic and international reward bookings for travel up to a year away. It normally costs 6,000 points per passenger to cancel a reward booking and get a refund of points, taxes and fees.
If you have an existing Classic Flight Reward booking, you can also change or cancel it for free until 31 October 2020.
Note that the fee waiver will only apply to bookings that contain only Classic Flight Rewards. If your booking has a paid fare combined with a Classic Flight Reward then the point fee waiver will not apply.
It appears this policy applies to bookings with partner airlines as well, although it’s not 100% clear from the language on Qantas’ website.
If you’re considering travel plans, this is a good opportunity to speculatively book some reward seats – especially since they are often snapped up quickly for peak travel periods like Christmas and school holidays.
