You can now redeem Velocity Points online to fly with Hainan and Hong Kong Airlines

Virgin Australia has switched on online reward seat bookings with partners Hainan Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines. That means you can now use your Velocity Points to book seats with these airlines directly from the Velocity website.

Hainan Airlines flies from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns to cities in China (Changsha, Haikou, Shenzen or Xi’an) and on to other Asian destinations. You can explore Hainan’s route map here.

Hong Kong Airlines flies from Brisbane and Cairns to Hong Kong and then onward to other Asian cities as well as Los Angeles and Vancouver (view the route map here).

Business class seats are available from as little as 53,000 Velocity Points one way, or 28,000 points in economy (plus modest taxes and fees).

I checked a few dates over the next six months for the direct Australia-China flights and there appears to be very good reward seat availability, including in business class.

The Velocity site wasn’t so friendly when I looked for seats on routes that require a connection (eg Beijing, Vancouver) so you may have to call Velocity about those.

If you’re thinking about a trip to Hong Kong or mainland China this year, this is a good opportunity to use your Velocity Points.

The ability to book on Hainan has been there for a while. I flew Syd-Xiy during Christmas. The flight itself and the service were meh, but for a mere 78k VFF for 11hrs+, it wasnt the worse of redemptions by any means.
